The Jihadis will return. We know this, in the same way that we know about death and taxes. Thanks in large part to the weakening of our defensive efforts under the new administration, there will be further attacks against this country's population, perhaps even worse than those of 9/11. (This week's attack by Nidal Malik Hasan serves to underline the threat.) When this attack occurs, we will see an end to all the nonsense. Our present drift regarding terror policy is occurring only because Americans have been encouraged to put unpleasant realities at a distance, to live in a dream...

The U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed a massive overhaul of the American health care system Saturday night by a vote of 220 to 215. One Republican, Rep. Joseph Cao of Louisiana, crossed the aisle, while 39 Democrats joined the Republicans in opposing the measure. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called passage of the bill "an historic moment for our nation and for America's families," while Republicans warned that the bill will raise taxes, increase insurance premiums and make cuts to Medicare. An enormous round of applause broke out throughout the House chamber when the crucial 218th vote was cast to...

I had lunch last week with Rolfe Winkler, who is an up and comer in the blog world, a thinking man’s Felix Salmon. He is similarly annoyed with St. Warren — but rather than engage in my sophmoric venom spew, he went to the spreadsheet to discover that Buffet owns major stakes in 8 companies that have received more than $100 billion in government bailouts. Capitalist? Hardly. Sounds more like just another crony to me. Rolfe also posts this fabulous chart:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives approved a sweeping healthcare reform bill on Saturday, backing the biggest health policy changes in four decades and handing President Barack Obama a crucial victory. On a narrow 220-215 vote, including the support of one Republican, the House endorsed a bill that would expand coverage to nearly all Americans and bar insurance practices such as refusing to cover people with pre-existing conditions. Most Republicans criticized its $1 trillion price tag, new taxes on the wealthy and what they said was excessive government interference in the private health sector. Democrats cheered and hugged when...

Obama, Obviously By R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr. WASHINGTON -- What strikes me about politics over the last couple of years is how obvious it all has been. In 2008, as the junior senator from Illinois campaigned across the country demonstrating his gifts as a motivational speaker and community organizer, all one had to do was review his recent life to know that he was about to bring down on the country -- ever so incompetently -- the most left-wing government in American history. And so he has -- with the utmost incompetence. Think of the paucity of swine flu vaccine,...

Like many Americans, I’m very concerned about the efforts underway to rush through the 2,000 page Pelosi health care bill this weekend. Why the rush? That’s a lot of pages to read. Why not give everyone the chance to read it and debate it? How much will this bill cost us? It’s unclear because the figures coming out of Washington keep changing – and always in the direction of costing more, not less. The latest numbers show it will cost more than a trillion dollars over the decade, but when has a government program ever come in on or under...

President Obama, in his pitch to Democrats on the Hill today (from the New York Times): Mr. Obama, during his private pep talk to Democrats, recognized Mr. Owens election and then posed a question to the other lawmakers. According to Representative Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, who supports the health care bill, the president asked, “Does anybody think that the teabag, anti-government people are going to support them if they bring down health care? All it will do is confuse and dispirit” Democratic voters “and it will encourage the extremists.”

Health Care has passed the house, putting the icing on the cake of Tarp Bailouts and Czars. I have decided to pull in my oars, and will no longer pull. 1. I am buying my food as locally and from small farmers. This keeps $$$ away from large agri-business who fund congressional champains. 2. I moved my money to a small local bank. They are not funding projects out of state, and are as furious as I am about what congress has done lately. 3. I have pushed my 401K up to 12.5 percent, and should have it at 20%...

Why won't we nominate one of the most conservative leaders with proven electability on the GOP ticket in 2012? Sure, it will only be an year and a half in the Governor's chair. But, who cares. Obama was only in the Senate an year and a half before he ran. Bob McDonnell gave Obama (and his puppet) a thumping in a key state. He is a social conservative as well and has shown the road to win key elections.

The American people need to send a stronger message to Washington...we are not paying any more tax money until you stop passing laws we do not want. We need to get everyone who has withholding tax to change it to zero NOW! Stop paying any federal taxes until Congress starts listening to us. We can bankrupt them in a month if we act fast and furious.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives voted on Saturday to tighten a ban against using federal funds to finance abortions under the proposed Democratic healthcare reform legislation. Opposition Republicans joined forces with anti-abortion Democrats to pass the amendment to the healthcare legislation on a vote of 240-194. The House approved a sweeping healthcare overhaul on Saturday on a narrow 220-215 vote. The battle over President Barack Obama's top domestic priority now moves to the Senate.

It is a historic vote--never before has the chamber passed such sweeping health care legislation--but not the historic vote that would send the bill to President Obama for his signature. The Senate must still vote on its own version of health care reform. If that passes, the two chambers would have to sort out their differences, producing a final bill to be voted on. That whole process could take months. In the coming weeks, a crucial debate surrounds health care reform: Will the process resemble that of the economic stimulus bill, a $787 billion measure passed in February with no...

Don't bring your pitchforks. This is to be our "last stand" to stop health care reform, it's Alamo time. Don't let your congressmen call it a "rally" or "protest"--make sure they say "press event" or "press conference." The point is to see "the whites of their eyes," because there's nothing a congressman fears more than a "freedom-loving American." Oh, and don't dress "too nicely." We don't want the press to start calling this another "Brooks Brothers riot" like they did when Bush aides stormed Miami hallways to stop the 2000 recount. Nancy D’Alesandro Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has regularly accused the Republicans in the House of displaying “a culture of corruption.” Yet the critical vote to get the House version of the health bill out of the House, demonstrates that Speaker Pelosi not only likes corruption, she counts on it. Remember her middle name because it figures in the proof. On 7 November at 11:15 pm House bill 3962 passed by a vote of 220-215. Votes in favor of that bill included the following: Norm Dicks (D-Wash), Jane Harman (D-Cal), Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), Alan Mollohan (D-WVa). Jim Moran...

Dear Friends, Tonight I cast a historic vote to overhaul America’s failing healthcare system to improve the healthcare of all Americans. This bill prohibits exclusions based on preexisting conditions and ensures American families will no longer be one illness or job loss away from bankruptcy. It also protects America’s senior citizens by fixing the donut hole sooner and allowing more drug price-negotiation to ensure seniors are getting the best prices for their medications. For the first time in our nation’s history, we will say that every American deserves access to affordable quality healthcare. I also believe that controlling escalating healthcare...

Listening to the debate on the floor today, it was clear that Democrats considered it a moral and ideological obligation to pass this bill—consequences be damned. The leadership is congratulating itself now—Pelosi is already the greatest speaker of all time apparently—but there's a tough rough ahead in the Senate. Pelosi could lose 39 votes. Reid can't lose any. Passage in the House definitely creates more pressure on Reid to get it done, but the slender margin—despite the size of the Democratic majority in the House and all the arm-twisting and deal-making (what did Cao get?)—has to make Senate moderates even...

The healthcare reform plan being pushed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Barack Obama illustrates the Democrats' radical agenda, hidden amid 1,990 pages of legislative jargon, says former New York Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey. In an op-ed article appearing Saturday on The Wall Street Journal's Web site, McCaughey reveals shocking details of the proposed legislation. Some of the more alarming aspects of the bill, according to McCaughey: # “Sec. 224 (p. 118) provides that 18 months after the bill becomes law, the Secretary of Health and Human Services will decide what a "qualified plan" covers and how much you'll...

The simplest of questions, why should "children" be covered to age 27 under their parent's health insurance policy as per the Pelosi bill? Isn't that incredible? I mean even if your "child" is in college and then graduate school, that's age 24. What possible reason can there be to treat a 27 year old as a "child" and to make insurance companies insure adults approaching middle age for free as if they were little kids living at home? Why not just cover everyone until they die, as a "child"? I guess that is the plan. can you imagine the fortune...

In a historic vote the House Health Care Bill Passed the House of Representatives 220 - 215 with 64 Democrats voting against the measure. However, the true test of whether it can pass the senate still looms. With a test vote losing out 47-53 a few weeks ago over the Baucus Bill, much persuasion must be had in the Senate for a bill to arrive at the President’s desk...

In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry. Republican opposition was nearly unanimous. The 220-215 vote cleared the way for the Senate to begin debate on the issue that has come to overshadow all others in Congress. A triumphant Speaker Nancy Pelosi likened the legislation to the passage of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare 30 years later. "It provides coverage for 96 percent of Americans. It offers everyone, regardless of...

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been tirelessly working to dispel the ‘China threat’ perception, which appears to be increasing concomitantly with the country's rapid economic and military rise. Beijing argues that China's growing initiatives in the Indian Ocean are for 'peaceful purposes' (China.org.cn., June 3). Yet, in recent years, many China watchers in India have captured another side of Beijing's foray that depicts China carving into the Indian Ocean's security architecture by regular incursions into the region and the recent naval deployment in the Gulf of Aden to fight piracy. These initiatives appear based on a strategy that...

Late on November 3 (November 4 in Europe) the General Motors (GM) corporation decided to retain ownership of its heavily indebted German subsidiary Opel. The decision reverses GM’s September 10 tentative consent to sell a majority stake in Opel to a Kremlin-dominated consortium. GM’s reversal became public on the final day of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s November 2-4 visit to the United States. Merkel learned about GM’s Opel decision only after completing her series of meetings with U.S. officials (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Financial Times Deutschland, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Handelsblatt, November 5, 6). Merkel had strongly advocated the Russian deal in recent months....

Sweeping Health Care Plan Passes House Luke Sharrett/The New York Times Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in Washington on Saturday. Tomorrow, the House of Representatives will vote on a 2,000 page bill to give the federal government the power to micromanage the health care of every single American. The bill will no doubt pass. It will raise your taxes, steal your freedom, invade your privacy, and ration your health care. Even the Republicans have introduced their version of Obamacare Lite. It, too, if passed, will compel employers to provide coverage, bribe the states to change their court rules, and tell insurance companies whom to insure. We do not have two political parties in this country, America. We have one party;...
