Partisan fatigue among factors in North Dakota lawmaker retirements

As a veteran legislator, Sen. Curt Kreun, R-Grand Forks, said he could look past some of the partisan rhetoric that has crept into the North Dakota Legislature.

He said he was chastised by Republican leaders in the 2023 session for co-sponsoring a bill with a Democrat, Sen. Tim Mathern of Fargo.

“So I get called on the carpet, big deal. I’ve been there longer than they have,” he said.

Kreun is among 13 lawmakers who served in the 2023 session who did not file paperwork to seek reelection to the Legislature in 2024. That’s in addition to three lawmakers who have resigned in recent months.

Age was cited by Kreun and several retiring legislators contacted by the North Dakota Monitor, but some used terms such as “culture warrior” and “RINO” and impending term limits as factors in the decision.

Rep. Shannon Roers Jones, R-Fargo, also said the divisiveness in politics and in the state Legislature played a role in her decision to not seek reelection.

“It certainly made serving less enjoyable,” she said.

Sen. David Rust, R-Tioga, began serving in the House in 2009 and switched to the Senate in 2015.

On how the Legislature has changed during his years in office, he said the Republican Party is veering to the right with “culture warrior type stuff.”

“That group of people have grown in their vocalness and in taking over the leadership of the local district,” Rust said.

What a pathetic POS. Did it ever occur to him the cultural marxists are driving the “culture stuff” and that Republicans are FORCED to fight back for family values? The Republicans didn’t “veer to the right.” Today’s “liberal” is an insane marxist intent on grooming children, mutilating them, and ruining their lives with their satanic influences.

Does he think all that Republicans should just roll over and accept all that “progressive stuff”?

Good riddance to a loser who doesn’t have the desire to fight the filthy rot infecting the nation.

Sounds like “conservatives” who are upset that they are actually expected to represent their constituents - rather than lobbyists and donors.

We heard the same from former “Conservative” Party leader O’Toole, when he resigned. He left complaining about populists and extremists, and conspiracy theories.
