Not Evangelicals per se, but the acceptance pf cohabitation on the part of the normally traditional Queen Elizabeth during Prince William and Catherine’s courtship phase is another notable example — where adherence to tradition was seen as more of a liability than anything. (See: Charles & Diana.)

What man is masochistic enough to marry?
Men won’t marry, so women have chosen to live with them.

The rise in cohabitation over the past few decades has been sharp across the developed world, including the United States. Despite the teaching of their faith, Evangelicals have not proven to be much of an exception. If Evangelical leaders wish to turn this ship around, they will need to explore fresh approaches to addressing this issue.
Concluding paragraph.
Do the Evangelical leaders wish?

Evangelical Protestants are clearly the least likely to say it is likely they will cohabit someday and are the most likely to have ruled cohabiting out. Still, only about one in four gave the “Bible answer” of “definitely not,” and close to half are planning on or leaning toward it. Evangelical Protestants are not as different as we might expect: 65% have cohabited, essentially the same as Black Protestants (66%) and Catholics (63%).

Differentiating terms tend to become watered down in time. "Evangelical" once meant "Bible believers" as those who strongly esteemed the Bible as being the sure, supreme, substantive, accurate and authoritative word of God. Classic "evangelicals"
long attested to being the most conservative unified large religious group (at least in the West) in key basic values and fundamental beliefs .

My daughter is getting married in the fall. As an evangelical Christian she and her fiancé are not cohabitating. They live a fair distance from each other and have arrangements with friends on each others town where one can stay.
It’s what you do.

Apparently studies have proven that when women and men get married first and then move in together, they're more likely to have a lasting marriage.
But if you don't do that, you're looking for a way out if something goes wrong.

Note age group:
The NSFG asks respondents who are not currently cohabiting or married if they think they are likely to cohabit in the future. Because I wanted to focus on young people’s views, I narrowed my focus to only those respondents who were 15 to 22 years of age who had never been married or cohabited. Evangelical Protestants are clearly the least likely to say it is likely they will cohabit someday and are the most likely to have ruled cohabiting out. Still, only about one in four gave the “Bible answer” of “definitely not,” and close to half are planning on or leaning toward it.

Aside from the religious aspect, it is a matter of commitment. Boyfriends should not get husband privileges. You don’t help yourself to the milk if you don’t buy the cow.

My understanding is that there was a time when companies discouraged cohabitation amongst employees, I know of one company that used to do a report on which employees had the same address but weren’t married, and would fire them if they found out.

CoHabitation has existed since the beginning of time in one form or another.
My partner and I lived together for 27 years until she passed and we had a great life together. Marriage just wasn’t something that was that important, it was the commitment to each other that was the thing.
