As part of President Donald J. Trump’s steadfast commitment to ensuring our forces are able to defend against any and all threats, the President has canceled the Obama Administration’s policy to prohibit United States military forces from employing anti-personnel landmines outside of the Korean Peninsula. The Department of Defense has determined that restrictions imposed on American forces by the Obama Administration’s policy could place them at a severe disadvantage during a conflict against our adversaries. The President is unwilling to accept this risk to our troops.
The Department of Defense is issuing a new landmine policy. This policy will authorize Combatant Commanders, in exceptional circumstances, to employ advanced, non-persistent landmines specifically designed to reduce unintended harm to civilians and partner forces. This action is yet another in a series of actions taken by the Trump Administration to give our military the flexibility and capability it needs to win. President Trump is rebuilding our military, and it is stronger than ever. The President will continue to support and equip our troops so that they will forever remain the greatest fighting force in the world.
They should be put on our southern border.
So friendly landmines with an expiration date that will only hurt bad guys.

If landmine use was needed to protect our troops, and was freely in use against our people, it must have been really demoralizing for our mil when Obama blocked the use of landmines) Any recollections how this was received?

I have been out for 50+ years.
Land mines have their uses, especially in areas that our troops are surrounded by hostiles as remote post in Viet Nam were. Without mines around the parameters it would be too easy for the enemy to sneak up to the line.
I thought land mines were banned from war fare........
Non-persistent landmines?
I like the idea but I’d like to hear more. Old landmines from previous wars are still blowing people up (or so I hear) but how do you make a mine that deactivates after a period of time?

This website FAQ re landmines provides look back to the issue in 2004 when the pres changed landmine policy. Back then the mines could "blow themselves up" any where from 4 hours to 15 days after implacement.

Maybe the mines have a Koran-shaped case made of corn starch, wires insulated with soy plastic, organic explosives, and a gift tag that says “Hi there, jihadis, communists, and jackwagons! Greetings from your Uncle Sam!”
But...but... Prince Charles’ feeling will be hurt...
They could use some around Mar-a-Lago to keep out all the TDS infected intruders.
