Revealed: How Much You Have to Earn to Be ‘Middle Class’ in Your State

Staying in the middle class takes a lot of work, according to a new analysis.

A look at the numbers from the website GOBankingRates.com found that it took a nearly 42 percent increase in income to remain in the middle class from 2012, the midpoint of the Obama administration, to 2022, the middle of the Biden administration.

The site published a state-by-state listing of what it takes to be in the middle class, defining the term as people with an income no less than two-thirds of the median income and no more than double that figure.

Although the national minimum to be in the middle class was $50,099 as of 2022, the numbers vary widely. For example, a Mississippi household earning $35,323 is considered middle class. In Maryland, however, the qualifying income is $65,641, according to the site’s calculations.

The middle class is shrinking. In 1971, 61% of American households were considered to be middle class. That number has dropped to 50% three decades later, a Pew Research found.

Over the decade-long period, Alaska had the smallest increase in income to stay in the middle class at almost 23 percent.

In Oregon, however, the bar to call oneself in the middle class rose by over 53 percent.

I would need far more information than the article provides to really make any sense out of the information it does provide.

For example, have the upper and lower classes been growing or shrinking?

Or, have the figures in general risen or fallen when adjusted for inflation?

Methodology:

For this piece, GOBankingRates first sourced the 2012, 2017 and 2022 household median income of every state, as sourced from the 2012, 2017 and 2022 American Community Surveys as conducted by the US Census Bureau. With these median household incomes isolated, GOBankingRates was able to find middle-class income ranges for each respective year with the following definition: those with an annual household income that was two-thirds to double the national median income. For each state, GOBaningRates found

(1) 2022 middle-class income range;

(2) 2017 middle-class income range;

(3) 2012 middle-class income range;

(4) 10-year change in middle-class income range; and

(5) 10-year percent change in middle-class income.

All data was collected and up to date as of April 8, 2024.

Very nice to see the numbers and the methodology.

A refreshing difference from some "papers" I have seen.

I’m definitely middle class in Florida. But those numbers are from 2022. I’d predict many fall off the middle class in 2024 numbers all over the country.

Having retired about 10 years ago, I figured I was pretty low class then & I shudder to think what income class I would be in by now had I continued working.

I am retired now, but can see from the chart on my state that back in 2012 when I was still working that I was nowhere near the bottom of middle class range. Admittedly, earlier in life I MIGHT have been in range for a year or two. In retirement, I am nowhere near middle class, but due to the ruination of this group by Biden, I am faring better because of taxation I no longer face. I guess it was a good thing to retire so I could survive.
