In Hopewell Township, N.J., the veterans of American Legion Post 339 have put their building up for sale. "Today's vets don't come out," 82-year old Jim Hall told The Times of Trenton last month. The post is down from 425 paying members in the 1960s and '70s to 202 this year; only about a dozen regularly attend. But it's America that has changed, not vets. Since 1970, the population of the United States has grown by about 50 percent, from roughly 200 million to 300 million. Over the same period, the number of active-duty armed forces has fallen approximately 50...

It couldn't have been easy for Bill Ayers to keep quiet while the McCain campaign tarred him as the Obama's best friend, the terrorist. Unfortunately, the silence was too good to last. On Saturday's New York Times op-ed page, he announced that "it's finally time to tell my true story." Like his memoir, Fugitive Days , "The Real Bill Ayers" is a sentimentalized, self-justifying whitewash of his role in the weirdo violent fringe of the 1960s-70s antiwar left. "I never killed or injured anyone, "Ayers writes. "In 1970, I co-founded the Weather Underground, an organization that was created after an...

On NBC’s Meet the Press this morning in an interview between Tom Brokaw and Barack Obama, the President-elect said his pick to run the VA, General Shinseki, was right about the surge. PRESIDENT-ELECT OBAMA: “I'm going to be making announcement tomorrow about the head of our Veterans Administration, General Eric Shinseki, who was a commander and has fought in Vietnam, Bosnia ...I think that General Shinseki is exactly the right person who's going to be able to make sure that we honor our troops when they come home." MR. BROKAW: "He's the man who lost his job in the Bush...

About 375 stuffed Beanie Babies shipped out from Montesano to Iraq last week. Local AMVETS members Jerry Hliboki and Bob Blewett sorted through new donations of toys and snack foods behind a large “We Support Our Troops” sign in the downtown Montesano window. “Montesano people, they give through the nose,” Hliboki says. “(But) it’s not enough.” Most items in the Operation Troop Support center get set aside for local Army National Guard soldiers recently deployed to Iraq. Others will go to the soldiers’ family members left on the Harbor. Boxes and plastic packages covered floors and counter tops. Hliboki and...

Time punishes war. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are no exception; as each moment passes, public resolve, politics and passion erode their mission. Collectively, many Americans tend to remember the mistakes and politics that led us there, rather than the faces of the men and women who serve and defend us. Two years ago, Lizzie Palmer, a young lady from Columbus, Ohio, barely over the threshold of childhood, felt compelled to do her part to remind people of those faces. The result is a stunning video that

Expanded role puts Petraeus in charge of winning Afghan war By Carl Prine and Salena Zito TRIBUNE-REVIEW Sunday, October 26, 2008 Fresh from the Baghdad battlefield, Gen. David Howell Petraeus is a blur amidst blurs in the bowels of the Pentagon, his staffers preparing new strategies and reassessing old ones for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. There's urgency to the bustle, because on Oct. 31 the former commander of Multinational Forces in Iraq takes over U.S. Central Command and inherits the counterinsurgency in Afghanistan, too. Whether that Halloween promotion eventually earns him a trick or a treat depends on...

Barack Obama is going to make inroads with military voters--if you believe the pundit class. Just moments after Colin Powell announced his support for the Democratic presidential nominee, NBC talking heads Joe Scarborough and Andrea Mitchell suggested that the endorsement of the retired general (and former Secretary of State) would translate into more military votes. From the transcript of their appearance on "Meet the Press," the same program where General Powell revealed his support for Senator Obama: MR. BROKAW: [Joe] You're very familiar with Florida. Will Colin Powell have much of an impact on that state, which is much more...

Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama, if elected, should avoid the same mistakes in Afghanistan that the Soviets made more than 20 years ago, U.S. Rep. John Murtha said today. "I told Obama's people, 'Don't get your feet too far in Afghanistan,'" Murtha, an 18-term Democrat from Johnstown, said during a wide-ranging interview with the Tribune-Review. Obama has said he wants to send more troops to Afghanistan.

Rep. Jack Murtha’s (D-Johnstown) opponent in this year’s congressional race -- Lt. Col. William Russell, a decorated Iraq war veteran who was in the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001 -- has just released an ad titled “In Cold Blood.” So far, it is one of the most powerful campaign spots to hit the airwaves in the down- ballot races this cycle in the Keystone State.

The idea began so simply, hatched in the heart of an injured soldier's mother. A homecoming. Terry Hardin's son, 22-year-old Army Spec. Kevin Hardin, would be back Saturday night — his first time home since a missile blew by him September 30 and lodged him at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, still, 10 months later.Terry Hardin called and e-mailed some people, who called and e-mailed more people, tapping into Forgotten Solidiers Outreach and the Patriot Guard, a biker group who more often escort hearses, plus the American Legion and their 11th District commander, David Knapp, who snapped right...

"The moonbats had a particularly dismal showing. Far from my initial estimate of a few thousand made a few days ago, they barely mustered perhaps four hundred. The poor weather undoubtedly drove some away, but their turnouts are so bad lately that it is hard to get our undercover operatives into their midst. The Adalah group whom I had been concerned about (because they announced they were going to meet at 44th St and march south to 42nd Street) were for the most part a no show. When I was still at the recruiter station I kept a sharp eye...

RIP Prayer Request From Mountainflower ~ TAPS ~ It is with deep sadness that I relate the following to you. On July 15 I received an email from Dan Small stating that our mutual friend, Hal Jones, has passed away after a 16-month or so battle with cancer. Hal Jones was with us in Washington, DC at Gathering of Eagles I. It was an honor to get to know him and Dan, and to stand with him as a Marshal that day in March. Oops, he said it again, Sen. John McCain that is, when referencing the "Czech Republic." McCain called the eastern European country Czechoslovakia today in New Mexico, as reported by Ben Smith at Politico, after blundering that same reference earlier. Perhaps McCain should stick to the script of the Bill Murray pop culture movie "Stripes" and just call it Wisconsin.

As Sen. Barack Obama beefs up his national security and foreign policy creds with a speech today on Iraq and Afghanistan -- his campaign Web site purged his former views critical of the surge in Iraq. The Daily News is reporting that Obama's campaign scrubbed his presidential Web site over the weekend to remove criticism of the U.S. troop 'surge' in Iraq. The Daily News reports that the "presumed Democratic nominee replaced his Iraq issue Web page, which had described the surge as a 'problem' that had barely reduced violence." Obama's old plan stated that the 'surge is not working.'...

Free Republic Exclusive Fred Phelps, leader of the "God-hates-faXs" movement, is planning on crashing the funeral of one of our War Dead on July 4th. Why? To spread his message of anti-homosexual SPAM in the most inappropriate way imaginable. There's a time and a place for everything. He's a publicity whore, as far as I'm concerned. Here are snips from an earlier FR Report: "A SF SGT E-5, James Stewart, will be buried in St. Petersburg, Florida on July 4, 2005. It's wholly appropriate that he be buried on our nation's birthday, because Sergeant Stewart gave his life for our...

MANDOZI, Afghanistan - Army Pvt. Justin Fillmore has some family military history. Yet he didn't really know what to expect in his first overseas combat mission. He is here in Afghanistan, he says, because he wanted to give a break to other soldiers, some of them on their second, third or fourth combat deployments. "I'm young enough, I can handle it," Fillmore, 23, of Latrobe says as he sits by a Humvee, smoking a cigarette. "I'm happy it happened, that I got to go while I still had the mind-set for it."

DURAGI, Afghanistan -- Early morning, and 14 U.S. soldiers stand in a semi-circle for a mission briefing. Four Humvees, engines running, rumble beside them. "We're going to Warshallah today," Army Capt. Sam Karr, 28, of Manhattan, Kan., tells his platoon. "I guess it has, like, 200 bad guys in it. That's nothing, dudes -- we've got 14, so we're good."

Gathering of Eagles has just announced Recruiter Appreciation Day, Saturday, May 17 or there abouts. Being a Saturday, some recruiter stations have shortened hours or are closed. GoE has once again stepped up to the plate this year. Check out the GOE site for pertinent info. Hopefully no one doubles up on a Recruiter Station while one across town is neglected.

FROM EMAIL from Doug Lyvere, Eagles Up -- ...Code Pink is on the ropes. The Marines have been welcomed by the Chamber of Commerce. More people, civilian's and businesses, have started showing their support for Veteran's. Everyone's efforts have started to pay off. Everyone should be proud. So this time we're going to do it a little differently. Last time we designated Berkeley a "No spend zone". Some said this had zero impact. I disagree - we made a point and whether or not a negative financial impact was felt, we got a response. This time, I think we should...

On June 3, 2008, Jodie Evans, the founder of Code Pink and an Obama Bundler went on the Conscience of Kansas Radio Show with Paul Ibbetson. During the interview, Jody Evans noted that Osama bin-Laden had a valid reason for attacking the United States on 9/11. From the interview: Jodie Evans:…”We were attacked because we were in Saudi Arabia, that was the message of Osama, was that because we had our bases in the Middle East, he attacked the United States.” Paul A. Ibbetson: “Do you think that’s a valid argument?” Evans: “Sure. Why do we have bases in the...

THE PRESIDENT: It's been a pleasure of my presidency to get to know the leaders of Rolling Thunder. For our fellow citizens who don't know Rolling Thunder, Rolling Thunder is the moment in time here in Washington, on Memorial Day Weekend, when thousands of motorcyclers come to the nation's capital to pay tribute to those who have died in service, to those who sacrificed, and those who serve. And it's a magnificent sight. We just choppered in, Artie, and saw your brothers and sisters cranking up their machines and driving through the nation's capital -- many of them have got...

Nathan, Jared, and Jason Hubbard. Inga Barks filled in for syndicated talk-radio host Mark Levin last night (and did a great job). During the last 1/2 hour of the show, she spoke with sole surviving son Army Specialist Jason Hubbard and Congressman Devin Nunes about this: Forced to leave the combat zone after his two brothers died in the Iraq war, Army Spc. Jason Hubbard faced another battle once he returned home: The military cut off his family's health care, stopped his G.I. educational subsidies and wanted him to repay his sign-up bonus. It wasn't until Hubbard petitioned his local...

For those who haven’t heard, IVAW will be presenting materials from their Winter Soldier investigation to the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) next Thursday (May 15). I’ve created another petition asking the CPC to verfiy any info that IVAW brings to them. This petition reads about the same as the petition that was circulated for the Senate Armed Services Committee. The CPC is more of an ad-hoc group than any sort of official committee, but since we’ve been out in front of IVAW on this, we should probably stay there. Please circulate this petition among your mailing lists. I’ll be doing...

PEQUANNOCK — Protesters bearing placards deriding anti-war "hippies" and "murderers" picketed New Jersey Peace Action's annual gathering at The Regency House Hotel on Sunday, while a former U.S. State Department official and a war dissenter spoke inside. About 20 people from a coalition of groups that support the Iraq war, including Gathering of Eagles and The Band of Mothers, stood by the hotel driveway on Route 23 and shouted "victory" to passing motorists. They were there to protest the presence of Ann Wright, a Foreign Service official who quit to protest the Iraq war, and Medea Benjamin, the founder of...

Tuesday, April 8th brought an onslaught of tan shirts to Capitol Hill. The Vets for Freedom Heroes tour stopped in DC to allow hundreds of Vets of Iraq and Afghanistan to visit with representatives. These Vets no strangers to missions, came with a new mission; Spread the great news of the progress made by our military in the Middle East. My personal hero, my husband was among the throng of those who had served overseas. After inspiring speeches by the likes of McCain, and a host of congressional representatives and Vets, [barely covered by the press] the tan shirts spread...

What comes to mind when you think of the United States peace movement? Cindy Sheehan? Code Pink? Berkeley? Those are all important players in the current U.S. movement for peace in Iraq, and their brave and tireless contributions should be commended. But many others around the country have also been voicing their desire for true peace and justice since before the war on Iraq began. And not all of them are white. One such grouping, which I have had the privilege to be part of these past five years, is the Strength in Unity contingent. Made of people and organizations...

McCain was a POW when U.S. began to use laser-guided bombs TRIBUNE-REVIEW By Salena Zito Sen. Rockefeller got down and dirty today with colleague John McCain in an interview with the Charleston Gazette in West Virginia when he said: "McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit. What happened when they [the missiles] get to the ground? He doesn't know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues." Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki had this to say about the Rockefeller smack down: "Senator...

I just heard from Chris Hill, Gathering of Eagles National Director. Following the 10am News Conference on Capitol Hill today, GOE visited 437 Congressional offices in support of the troops and their mission. Chris said that "probably half of the offices were happy to see us," with "one quarter apathetic and one quarter passive-aggressive." Predictably, Southern Democrats and Republicans were more typically glad to see GOE representatives. Overall, more than 200 in the House of Representatives gave a positive response to the Eagles. Vets for Freedom will be doing follow-up lobbying Capitol Hill on Tuesday, and the VFW follows...
